How to: microdose mushrooms
What is microdosing?
Microdosing is the act of taking “sub perceptual” doses of psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) for improved mind and focus.
Psilocybin, converts into psilocin once ingested. Psilocin binds to our serotonin receptors boosting dopamine and stimulating BDNF
BDNF – brain derived neurotrophic factor – promotes neuron survival and growth, acts as a neurotransmitter modulator, and contributes to learning and memory.
At the Mushroom Hut, we offer a growing selection of immune boosting, ailment healing mushrooms in various forms. From tinctures ( I personally use in my matcha everyday) to dried whole fruit bodies.
The goal
The goal is not to physically feel anything from a microdose, so we can continue our day to day activities ie. school, work, driving.
Why Microdose?
Remove creative blocks, solve stubborn problems, find focus, improve relationships, ease anxieties and lift depression.
“I don’t think that I would be nearly as present as I am right now had it not been for psychedelics-”
Protocols
For continued maximum benefit, it is suggested you take a few days off during your microdosing cycle.
Below we have some on the most common protocols. However, finding one that’s right for your lifestyle can take time.
Fadiman Protocol
DAY 1: 1st microdosing day
DAY 2: transition day (afterglow)
DAY 3: normal day
DAY 4: 2nd microdosing day
Continue for 4-8 weeks
Break for 2-4 weeks
Microdose institutes protocol
DAY 1: 1st microdosing day
DAY 2: transition day
DAY 3: 2nd microdosing day
DAY 4: transition day
Continue for 4-8 weeks
Break for 2-4 weeks
Stamets Stack
Traditionally combined with 50-200mg of lion’s mane extract and 100-200mg of niacin
DAY 1-4: microdosing days
DAY 5-7: tolerance break days
Continue for 4 weeks
Break for 2-4 weeks
The Night Cap
Microdosing before bed; users report experiencing more vivid dreams, waking up feeling more rested and refreshed.
What is tolerance?
Shroom tolerance refers to how strongly you respond to psilocybin. In contrast to alcohol and opioids, psilocybin is not considered addictive.
Breaks or resets are important to avoid tolerance build up and will help maintain the healing effects of microdosing psychedelics.
The body quickly develops a tolerance for psilocybin and if taken too often, benefits diminish rapidly; resulting in a noticeable decrease in effect.
Health benefit & tips
While studies for psilocybin are few and far between, as the stigma of psilocybin moves in a slow (but progressive) shift, some have shown the therapeutic effects mushrooms have on treatment resistant Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Anxiety along with many other mental health illnesses.
We suggest to start your microdosing journey on a day with no obligations, if you are unsure of your tolerance.
Like cannabis, a large dose could feel uncomfortable but it is virtually impossible to consume a fatal dose. Pregnant, breastfeeding and children under 19 are strongly advised against the use of psilocybin. “Trip sitters” are suggested for new comers and it is always imperative to do your own research.
Additionally, it has been shown individuals taking SSRI’s have a dramatically reduced effect from microdosing. Since traditional anti depressants target the serotonin receptors just as psilocybin does, your tolerance will be higher and you may need to take a higher dose.
“It may be—we have zero laboratory evidence—that when you’re taking [psychedelics] over time and your health, attitude, and mental functioning improve…that you’re building a healthier inner brain lattice or network of neurons that have been improved by their exposure to microdosing.”
